The Convention of 1 June 1970 on the Recognition of Divorces and Legal Separations (HCCH 1970 Divorce Convention) aims to facilitate the recognition in one Contracting State of divorces and legal separations obtained in another. It assures divorced and separated spouses that their new status will receive the same recognition abroad as in the country where the divorce or separation is obtained. The Convention thereby simplifies the possibility of remarriage and clarifies the legal relationship of the couple concerned – a factor that can also prove very important in relation to wills and successions.
