El Salvador accedes to the 1996 Child Protection Convention
Today, 10 September 2024, the Republic of El Salvador deposited its instrument of accession to the Convention of 19 October 1996 on Jurisdiction, Applicable Law, Recognition, Enforcement and Co-operation in respect of Parental Responsibility and Measures for the Protection of Children (1996 Child Protection Convention).
With the accession of El Salvador, the 1996 Child Protection Convention now has 55 Contracting Parties. It will enter into force for El Salvador on 1 July 2025. More information on this Convention is available on the Child Protection Section of the HCCH website.
At the ceremony, which was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, depositary of the HCCH Conventions, El Salvador was represented by H.E. Ms Alexandra Hill Tinoco, Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr Agustín Vásquez Gómez, Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Ms Samali Dinarte, Head of the Communications Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The depositary was represented by Mr Jules van Eijndhoven, Head of the Treaties Division, Mr Rieks Boekholt, Senior Legal Officer at the Treaties Division, Ms Ines Veldkamp, Country officer for El Salvador at the Western Hemisphere Department, and Ms Esther Tessemaker, Team coordinator for Central and South America at the Western Hemisphere Department, while the Permanent Bureau of the HCCH was represented by Ms Laura Martínez-Mora, Secretary (Lawyer) and co-Head of the International Family and Child Protection Law Division, and Ms Capucine Page, Legal Officer.
El Salvador has been a Member of the HCCH since 2022 and is now a Contracting Party to six HCCH Conventions.
