Kick-off Meeting of the Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) Project
On 5 July 2023, the kick-off meeting of the CBDCs Project was held online. The meeting was attended by 38 experts, representing 15 Members and three Observers, as well as by members of the Permanent Bureau (PB) of the HCCH.
The CBDCs Project will study the private international law implications of CBDCs, as mandated by the Council on General Affairs and Policy (CGAP) of the HCCH in March 2023 (Conclusion & Decision No 16).
During the kick-off meeting, experts laid the foundation for the preparatory and exploratory work relating to the CBDCs Project. The PB of the HCCH will report on the outcomes of the project to CGAP at its 2024 meeting, including proposals for next steps.
The PB is also pleased to announce that it is planning to organise an online colloquium on the topic of CBDCs, as mandated by CGAP (Conclusion & Decision No 17). This colloquium is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, 5 October 2023. The PB plans to organise this colloquium as a series of pre-recorded video discussions, featuring expert presentations on the private international law implications of CBDCs. A live panel will be scheduled on the same day to summarise the proceedings and provide conclusions. Information on the online colloquium will be provided in due course.
