Tobias Asser's Inaugural Address 1862-2012
At the initiative of Prof. Ernst Hirsch Ballin, a commemoration was held on Saturday 20 October at the Agnietenkapel in Amsterdam, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the lecture delivered by Tobias Asser as professor at the Athenaeum Illustre (now University) of Amsterdam on 20 October 1862 in the same Agnietenkapel.
Prof. Hirsch Ballin commemorated Asser's achievements with a historical-sociological presentation, which, together with an English translation of Asser's inaugural address, was published by T.M.C. Asser Press, The Hague, with the title A mission for his time - Tobias Asser's Inaugural Address on Commercial Law and Commerce, Amsterdam 1862. This book was presented to the Secretary General of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Secretary General of the Hague Conference and Justice Daan Asser, a great grand son of Tobias Asser, in the presence of other members of the Asser family, all of whom delivered a short speech. The speech of the Secretary General of the Hague Conference is accessible here.
