Paraguay signs and ratifies the 2007 Child Support Convention and its Protocol
On 25 October 2024, H.E. Mr Enrique Miguel Franco Maciel, Ambassador of the Republic of Paraguay to the Kingdom of Belgium, signed and ratified, on behalf of Paraguay, the Convention of 23 November 2007 on the International Recovery of Child Support and Other Forms of Family Maintenance (2007 Child Support Convention) and the Protocol of 23 November 2007 on the Law Applicable to Maintenance Obligations (2007 Maintenance Obligations Protocol).
At the ceremony, held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, depositary of the HCCH Conventions, Ambassador Franco Maciel was accompanied by Mr Federico Bartolozzi, Minister at the Embassy of Paraguay. The depositary was represented by Mr Jules van Eijndhoven, Head of the Treaties Division, Mr Rieks Boekholt, Senior Legal Officer at the Treaties Division, and Ms Esther Tessemaker, Team Coordinator for Central and South America at the Western Hemisphere Department, while the Permanent Bureau of the HCCH was represented by Mr Philippe Lortie, First Secretary (Diplomat Lawyer) and co-Head of the International Family and Child Protection Law Division, and Mr Jean-Marc Pellet, iSupport Coordinator.
With the ratification of Paraguay, 52 States and the European Union are bound by the 2007 Child Support Convention, while 34 States and the European Union are bound by the 2007 Maintenance Obligations Protocol. Both the Convention and the Protocol will enter into force for Paraguay on 1 February 2025. More information on these instruments is available on the Child Support Section of the HCCH website.
Paraguay has been a Member of the HCCH since 2005 and is now a Contracting Party to eight HCCH Conventions and instruments.
